I Love Dirt.
Pledge:
I promise to love the dirt. I'll do my part to protect the Earth. I'll
keep my garbage picked up and my neighborhood clean. I'm glad
I'm a kid who loves dirt.
Page 1:
Dirt is everywhere. It covers the Earth like a blanket. I like red dirt.
I like brown dirt. I like black dirt. I love dirt.
Ever notice that dirt comes in different colors? Try this. Find a clean
jar with a lid. Ask your parents for a spoon. Now look for
interesting dirt. Put a layer in the bottom of the jar. Add a second
layer. How many different colors of dirt can you find? Screw the jar
cap on tight and display your dirt samples in your room.
Page 2:
I love dirt. When I mix dirt and water, guess what I get? Beautiful
mud! My boots squish and slide. "SCLUB! BLUB! SCHLLERPPP!" says
the mud. It feels cold. I'm pretending I'm making a pie. I love dirt.
Dirt is a good place for plants to grow. Give the dirt a drink. Use a
garden hose or a watering can. What happens when you stir a little
water into a bucket of dirt? Add more and more water and see what
happens!
Page 3:
I planted seeds in the garden. In a few days, the seeds became
plants! They popped their green heads up. Seeds must like dirt, too.
I love dirt.
Try growing a plant. Cut the bottom out of a small milk carton. Fill it
halfway with dirt. Plant one green bean seed. Add a little water.
Now set the carton in a sunny window...and wait.
Page 4:
I love dirt. Instead of a snowman, I made a small mudman. I used
gumdrops for eyes. "How interesting," said Mom with a smile.
"Thanks," I said proudly. I love dirt.
What can you make from mud? A bowl? (Don't wash it in the sink!)
Round mud bon-bons? (Don't eat them!!) Mud snakes? (They don't
bite!!!) Mud is good for playing make-believe.
Page 5:
I love dirt. I made footprints in the dirt. I used my sneaker, an old
boot, and my baby sister's shoe. Some footprints were big. Some
footprints were small. I love dirt.
Make your own footprints in the dirt. Use old shoes, sneakers, or
boots. What kind of footprints did you make?
Page 6:
I love dirt. We keep food scraps in a big bin outside. Soon we have
what the garden likes to eat most--compost! Our compost makes the
dirt a good place for the plants to grow. I love dirt.
Help Mom and Dad feed compost to the garden. Rake, rake, rake the
compost into the garden.
Page 7:
I love dirt. I used a shovel to dig in the dirt. I wanted to dig all the
way to China before lunch. But I got hungry first. Time for lunch! I
love dirt.
What do you find when you dig in the Earth? Roots. Stones. Bugs.
Worms. The dirt is home to many friends like chipmunks, gophers,
and bunnies.
Page 8:
I love dirt. Dirt is good for drawing. All I need is a stick. I could
draw all over the world. The rain erases all my pictures. I'll start
over tomorrow. I love dirt.
Play this game of hide and seek with a friend. Bury a rock in the
dirt. Use a stick to draw a trail to the rock. Can your friend find the
rock?
Page 9:
I love dirt. This old can doesn't belong in the dirt. It's garbage! Into
the trashcan it goes! I don't love garbage. I love dirt.
Get together with your friends. Pick up the garbage in your
neighborhood. Every little bit helps.
Page 10:
I love dirt. Dirt likes water and sun. It doesn't like pollution. I take
care of the Earth because...I love dirt.
Make a poster. Tell others to take care of the Earth's dirt. Hang the
poster in your window.
